"'The Soul's Distinct Connection': Emily Dickinson, Photography, and 19th-Century American Culture" is a web teaching component of The Classroom Electric: Dickinson, Whitman and American Culture project sponsored by FIPSE. Marta L. Werner is its author, and Lara Vetter its designer. Server space is generously provided by the Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities at the University of Virginia.

Images and texts included in "'The Soul's Distinct Connection'" are used as set forth in the Fair Use Act; when necessary, copyright permissions have been secured.

From the outset this site has been a collaborative project. I gratefully acknowledge the assistance of Daria D'Arienzo, Head of Archives and Special Collections, Amherst College Library; Tevis Kimball, Curator of Special Collections, The Jones Library; Cindy Dickinson, Curator, The Dickinson Homestead; Theresa Percy, Library Director, The Monson Free Library and Reading Room Association; Richard V. Szary, Director, Manuscripts and Archives, Yale University; Danelle Moon, Yale University Library; Susan Glover Godlewski, Curator of Rare Books, Boston Public Library; Martha Hoppin, Interim Curator, The Mead Art Museum; Mark Brown, Curator of Manuscripts, The John Hay Library, Brown University; Leslie Morris, Curator of Manuscripts, Houghton Library, Harvard University; and the Photoduplication Staff at the Library of Congress. I am also indebted to Barton Levi St. Armand, Professor of American Civilization, Brown University, who generously responded to my questions about a daguerreotype of Susan Gilbert Dickinson. Without the cooperation of these individuals and institutions, this site could not have been completed. In addition to permitting me to examine the materials included here, they responded to my questions about the history and contents of their collections and, in most cases, permitted images of materials in their collections to be reproduced here.

Finally, I am grateful to Lara Vetter (Ph.D. candidate, University of Maryland, College Park; Associate Editor & Project Manager, Dickinson Electronic Archives) for her innovative design work.
