"Two"
Two Confederate soldiers died shortly after Whitman's visit of September 10, 1865. The first was Jonathan Wallace, a 36-year old private in Company F, 21st Georgia, who had received a gunshot wound that fractured his left femur at Petersburg on March 25, 1864, and died on September 23, 1865 of pyaemia. The second was Joseph W. Sailer, a private in Company K, 48th North Carolina, who received a gunshot fracture of the upper libria at Hatcher's Run, Virginia, on March 31, 1865, and died on October 1, 1865, of "exhaustion from gunshot wound."
